Providing physiotherapy in Vancouver since 2009
As physiotherapists, we are movement specialists. We understand how the body’s muscles and joints work together to allow you to move with ease and grace. When you come to us to assess and diagnose the issue you are dealing with, your Cross Roads physiotherapist may use any of the following approaches to formulate a customized treatment plan:

Manual Therapy
We apply hands-on treatment to joints of the spine and extremities as a means to restore movement and alleviate stiffness. This also has a positive impact on the movement of soft tissues surrounding the joints including muscles, ligaments and nerves. When patients describe us as having “healing hands”, it comes from years of experience working with patients and understanding through hands-on treatment how each individual’s body is affected differently by injury.

Dry Needling / IMS and Acupuncture
Depending on your needs, our physiotherapists are trained to provide dry needling and intramuscular stimulation (IMS), or traditional acupuncture. Dry needling uses acupuncture needles to directly treat trigger points or muscle knots which are associated with chronic muscle tension and pain. Traditional acupuncture has a holistic approach and involves the insertion of needles along classical meridians or acupuncture pathways to provide pain relief and promote healing.
Exercise Therapy
After applying hands on treatment to address pain and stiffness, we will teach you a customized exercise program that will correct muscle imbalances, and improve your coordination and flexibility. Our clinic has a spacious 1200 sqft. gym space housing all the equipment that you may need during exercise. Success requires your active participation in exercise therapy.

Clinical Pilates
The DMA Clinical Pilates program was developed by Craig Philips, an Australian physical therapist and former dancer. This form of pilates extracts from traditional pilates exercises and using research-based principles, builds these exercises into an application to help people with injuries. Functional assessments are used to diagnose issues and to guide the selection of appropriate stabilization training. Proper muscle recruitment and movement pattern is emphasized over strength. Cross Roads physiotherapist Winnie Chan is DMA-certified in Clinical Pilates. She incorporates mat pilates and training on the pilates reformer into physiotherapy treatment. Electro-Physical Agents
This term refers to modalities which we use to address your acute pain and/or any active inflammation in your joints and soft tissues. Modalities may include: the use of ice or heat, ultrasound, laser and electrical therapies such as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Interferential Current Stimulation. Electrical muscle stimulation may also be used to train a very weak muscle to contract.
Other Services
Telehealth Physiotherapy
The option to consult our physiotherapists through virtual appointments is available. We use doxy.me which provides a secure service with end-to-end encryption and fulfills the requirements of the Canadian Personal Information Protection & Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). There is no need for patients to download any software or open any accounts. Some examples of patients who may benefit from a virtual appointment include:
- existing patients who need to be reassessed and prescribed home exercise progressions and self-management techniques
- new patients with acute or chronic injury who wish to be assessed and triaged to determine course of care, including instruction on self-management of symptoms.
We can direct bill your insurer for virtual appointments as long as it is covered. Most insurance providers including Pacific Blue Cross, Sunlife and WorkSafe BC allow for virtual appointments. Book telehealth physiotherapy appointments online or contact us at 604-568-1337.
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy: Treatment of Female Urinary Incontinence
Many women believe that urinary incontinence (the involuntary loss of urine) is a normal part of the aging process. In fact, it is not normal and may be a symptom of further pelvic floor dysfunction. Incontinence may be a consequence of pelvic floor muscle weakness, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder and other conditions. Physiotherapy for incontinence is a comprehensive treatment that retrains the pelvic floor muscles to contract in an optimal way, teaches behavioral techniques to change voiding habits, and examines environmental and dietary factors which impact bladder health. Women who require surgical treatment may still benefit from physiotherapy to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve the outcome of surgery. Cross Roads Physiotherapist Janet Leung has special training in pelvic floor physiotherapy. Please phone the clinic at 604-568-1337 to book an appointment with her.
Direct Access to Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists are primary health care providers. A referral is not required from your doctor to consult a physiotherapist. Some extended health plans may require a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy in order to receive reimbursement so you may want to check with your insurance provider.
